What is the Best Scar Treatment for Mastectomy Scars?
Lumpectomy and mastectomy scars have evolved over the last two decades to minimize breast scarring and changes to the shape of the breasts. Breast cancer surgeons and plastic surgeons are intimately aware of the aesthetic needs of women who undergo breast cancer biopsies and surgeries. Although medical concerns come first, it is important to prioritize wound care and scar care after breast surgery.
If you have undergone a breast biopsy, lumpectomy, mastectomy; you may have developed a scar from your surgery. The scar may be compounded by any type of reconstructive surgery scars such as a TRAM flap, Latissimus flap, or free flap reconstruction of the breasts. These scars can be indented, hypopigmented, hyperpigmented, thick, raised, hypertrophic, keloid-like, or discolored. Breast scars that have undergone radiation may also display signs of radiotherapy to the skin.
It is important to keep close follow-up with your surgeon to assess any changes to the scars, especially if there is an abnormal growth of scar tissue. In most cases, however, the surgical scars respond well to topical scar therapy.
